Ceramic Braces/Clear Brackets

Ceramic braces are often described as traditional braces, but with brackets made of a clear ceramic compound, rather than metal. This is why they are sometimes called “clear brackets”. In fact, some ceramic braces use tooth-colored wires, to reinforce the illusion further.

However, ceramic braces have a number of important structural differences to consider. Ceramic brackets are larger than those of traditional metal braces, which makes brushing gums more difficult, and can increase the likelihood of gum swelling as a result.

Ceramic is also a less durable material than stainless steel, which is used in most traditional metal braces. Long term use can effect the quality of the ceramic braces and may damage the enamel of the teeth to which they are attached.

On the other hand, ceramic braces are arguably less prone to irritate gums than metal braces, although this depends on the patient in question. Some benefits may be worth more to you than others, especially given that the primary popular appeal of ceramic braces is their appearance, so please consider your needs carefully.

If ceramic braces interest you, please contact us for a dental consultation or appointment.
